Runcie has been exhibiting professionally since 1995 in New York City, Philadelphia, Washington D.C., Miami and Houston. His work is part of collections throughout the United States and abroad.
Originally from the Newark, Delaware area, Runcie Tatnall is perhaps best known for his portraits and boxing paintings.
“I’ve always been into boxing”, he says. Runcie’s first oil painting was a boxing picture, created while still in high school. He launched his career as an important boxing artist with an MFA exhibition in 2009 entitled “In the Ring” which included 26 large boxing canvases.
The powerfully expressive paintings of Runcie Tatnall reflect on both internal and external struggle. Runcie’s paintings have been called “keenly observant, expressive and raw; imbued with energy, potential energy, and the tension of the before and after narrative. His ability to identify with his subjects is captured through impulsive, yet precise gestures.”
Runcie’s paintings pull the viewers into a world evoking such painters as Hopper, the Ash Can school and John Singer Sargent. They invite, they don’t discourage.
Runcie trained in painting and illustration at the University of Delaware, the Art Students League in New York City, and various boxing gyms in Miami and New York City. He received his MFA in painting from the University of Miami.
Tatnall was an assistant professor of art at Stephen F. Austin State University in Texas from 2010-2016.
Runcie Tatnall currently lives in Miami, Florida.
